6.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Greece

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Crete early Wednesday, according to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens. No injuries or significant damage have been reported.

The quake occurred at a depth of 64.4 kilometers, approximately 19 kilometers south of Kasos island.

As a precaution, Greek emergency services issued a tsunami warning through the 112 alert system, advising residents to stay away from coastal areas.

The tremor was felt as far away as Israel, southwestern Turkey, and parts of Egypt.

Greece, located on multiple seismic fault lines, frequently experiences earthquakes.

No cause for concern, say experts
Seismologist Efthymis Lekkas characterized the event as isolated, noting the absence of both a notable foreshock pattern and significant aftershocks.

“These types of earthquakes are usually standalone events,” he told state broadcaster ERT.

Addressing speculation about links to recent seismic activity on Santorini or the recent earthquake in Turkey, Lekkas dismissed any connection.

“There’s no relation to the seismic activity in Santorini – the geological settings are completely different – and it’s entirely unrelated to the quake in Turkey,” he said.
