The Diriyah Biennale Foundation has unveiled the third edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale, set to run from November 1, 2027, to March 1, 2028, at Jeddah’s Western Hajj Terminal, an architectural icon honored with the Aga Khan Award, according to Arab News.
Islamic Arts Biennale
The Islamic Arts Biennale, launched by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, stands out as the world’s pioneering biennale devoted solely to celebrating the artistic legacy of Islamic civilizations and exploring past traditions with contemporary expression.
Building on the success of its inaugural and second editions, the Islamic Arts Biennale 2027 will introduce a more advanced vision, following earlier presentations of over 500 historic objects from more than 40 institutions across 20 countries.
The exhibition features several historic works—some shown for the first time—alongside new contemporary pieces, highlighting visions and perspectives that connect with people’s lives today around the world.
Opening at the end of each year, the third edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale as well as future editions of the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale, will offer the Foundation a great opportunity to strengthen its institutional partnerships while aligning with the Kingdom’s broader cultural calendar.
AlMadar
AlMadar (“The Orbit”), an initiative conceived by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, lies at the heart of this expansion.
The initiative seeks to reimagine the Biennale, not as a periodic exhibition, but as a sustained global platform for Islamic arts.
It also explores how works from across eras and geographies are convened, studied, and experienced.
Interestingly, AlMadar will evolve into a year‑round initiative anchored by four pillars, as follows:
AlMadar Exhibition
Each edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale will present a landmark exhibition and several public programs.
AlMadar Digital
It serves as a technology‑driven repository for research, collaboration, and storytelling.
AlMadar Initiatives
Through a series of symposia, talks, and workshops, the initiative seeks to support scholarship and creative practice.
AlMadar Community
This global network will bring institutions and organizations together for knowledge exchange and collaborative opportunities.
