The Kingdom’s support for the West African nation extends beyond statements, taking shape in strong diplomatic, security, and economic ties, in line with Riyadh’s commitment to regional stability and counterterrorism.
Niamey Unrest
Driving the News: In a statement issued by its Foreign Ministry, Saudi Arabia strongly condemned Niamey’s events, reaffirming its solidarity with the government and the people of Niger against any attempt to undermine the country’s security and stability. The Kingdom also reiterated its full support for Niger’s sovereignty and security.
The Backstory: Early on Saturday, August 29, rebellious soldiers attacked a key military base in Niamey’s main airport and near the presidential palace, triggering hours of armed clashes and unrest across Niger‘s capital. Later, the state TV announced that security forces “gradually took back control” of the situation.
Saudi-Niger Security Cooperation
The Big Picture: Saudi Arabia and Niger maintain a security relationship centered on counterterrorism, regional stability, and multilateral cooperation through collective frameworks, such as the Saudi-led Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) and the Sahel Countries Program.

- The Sahel Countries Program: Supported by Saudi Arabia, the IMCTC launched the second phase of its specialized Sahel Countries Program in Niamey on January 30, 2025. This framework functions as a collaborative operational program providing technical and logistical support to confront cross-border terrorism in West Africa.
- Anti-Financing Training: The IMCTC launched an advanced training program on Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing, from November 17-21, 2025, in Niamey. The program focused on anti-money laundering, tracking illicit funding networks, and financial data analysis.
- Specialized Media Programs: From November 24 to December 2, 2025, the IMCTC launched the Specialized Media Programs in Niger to improve media and television messaging in order to enhance the role of security and traditional media in combating terrorism in the Sahel region.
- Rehabilitation and Reintegration: The IMCTC launched the Training of Specialists in Integration and Rehabilitation Centers for Extremists program in Niamey on December 16, 2025 to train specialists working in integration and rehabilitation centers for extremists on implementing scientific approaches against radicalization.

State of Play: Economic and developmental cooperation is another pillar of Saudi-Nigerien relations, driven by the Saudi-Niger Joint Commission.

Established in 2022 in Riyadh, the Saudi-Niger Joint Commission aims to bolster bilateral ties and cooperation across various sectors, including politics, economy, security, infrastructure, investment, and culture. Holding its second session in Niamey in April 2026, the Commission agreed to establish three subcommittees for political, security, economic, and cultural cooperation.
