Islamic Arts Biennale 2025: Kaaba Kiswa to Debut outside Makkah

For the first-ever time, the entire Kiswa (cover) of the Holy Kaaba will be displayed outside of Makkah at the Islamic Arts Biennale 2025, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

In a press release, the Diriyah Biennale Foundation announced that this edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale, taking place from January 25 to May 25, 2025 at the Western Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, will showcase the Kaaba Kiswa.

Introducing Kaaba Kiswa

Held under the theme “All That Is In Between,” the Islamic Arts Biennale 2025 will provide a presentation that introduces the Kiswa, highlighting its history and development over the centuries.

It will also display the arts, artifacts and craftsmanship associated with the Kiswa in a unique showcase that enables visitors to explore the intricate weaving and embroidery of the Kaaba Kiswa, featuring silk, gold, and silver threads.

Highlighting Islamic Heritage

Moreover, the Islamic Arts Biennale will showcase a wide collection of Islamic historical artifacts and contemporary artworks to invite visitors to delve into the depth and richness of Islamic civilization and its artistic elements.

The display of Kaaba Kiswa aims to reinforce the sense of pride in Islamic cultural heritage, allow the public to closely explore one of the most significant aspects of Islamic art, and provide a deeper understanding of the skilled craftsmanship in making the Kaaba Kiswa.

Saudi Arabia’s Vital Role

Furthermore, the Kiswa display emphasizes the central role of Saudi Arabia in serving Islam and Muslims, by providing the capabilities and skilled craftspeople to make the Kiswa at the Kiswa Factory of the Holy Kaaba (King Abdulaziz Complex).

It also aligns with the Kingdom’s custodianship of the Two Holy Mosques and the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 to enrich the religious and cultural experiences of pilgrims and preserve the Kingdom’s Islamic heritage.

The Kiswa display will coincide with the first Hijri centenary of the establishment of the Kiswa Factory of the Holy Kaaba, which has been manufacturing the Kiswa since 1346 AH (1927).
