How to Make Saudi Gahwa (Coffee)

Gahwa: Famous Beverage in Saudi Arabia

 

For generations, Saudi Gahwa has been an integral aspect of Saudi Arabian society and represents the epitome of hospitality when it comes to greeting visitors.

Arabic coffee, or Gahwa, is produced from ground, roasted coffee beans combined with cardamom and cloves. This beverage is usually enjoyed with fresh dates or other sweets. It is accessible day and night.

Notably, Gahwa is typically poured into small cups and served in unique thermoses known as Dallah.

 

Materials Needed to Make Saudi Gahwa

To make Saudi Gahwa you need Dallah, which is a thermos, used to keep the coffee hot. Moreover, you need handless cups named ‘Finigan’.

Recipe of Saudi Gahwa

The process of creating Gahwa differs greatly from one place to another due to differences in the quality and type of coffee beans, and different ingredients or flavoring added to them. However, there are staple components to prepare Saudi Gahwa.

Ingredients:

  • Arabic Gahwa beans or 3 tbsp of coffee powder.
  • 1 liter of water.
  • 1tbs of crushed cardamom.
  • A pinch of Saffron
  • A pinch of Ginger powder
  • 1 tbs of rose water

Instructions:

Firstly, add 1 liter of water to the Dallah on medium flame. Secondly, add 3 tablespoons of Arabic coffee powder, then leave it on high heat until it starts to boil.

Thirdly, lower the temperature and leave it boiling for 20 minutes, and then turn it off.

Fourthly, add the spices of Gahwa (1 tbs Crushed cardamom- A pinch of Saffron- a pinch of Ginger powder -1 tbs of rose water) to improve its taste. Fifthly, leave it to rest for 5 minutes before serving it.

Finally, pour the coffee into handless small cups and present them with dates.

Tips about Boiling Gahwa

  • Boil it at between 100 and 120 degrees Celsius without stirring.
  • The ideal boiling time ranges from four to six minutes.
