Chicken Kabsa: One of Famous Dishes in Saudi Cuisine

 

Food in Saudi Arabia is a masterful fusion of culture, creativity, and tradition, capturing the dynamic spirit of the nation’s Bedouin heritage. Food is significant in traditional Saudi Arabian culture regarded as a sign of hospitality. Unlike many other Middle Eastern culinary traditions, the foundation of KSA cuisine mostly consists of red meat, especially lamb, with chicken playing a large secondary role. One of the most famous dishes in Saudi Cuisine is Chicken Kabsa.

Notably, Chicken Kabsa is considered the national dish of Saudi Arabia. Kabsa is a tasty mixed basmati rice made with chicken, veggies, and a variety of spices.

Chicken Kabsa Recipe

1)Ingredients of Chicken Kabsa

  • 2 cups of basmati rice
  • 500g chicken
  • 2 large onions, chopped
  • 5 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup of raisins
  • 1/4 cup of sliced almonds
  • 4 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 4 carrots, grated
  • 2 dried limes
  • 1 tablespoon of Kabsa spice mix
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups of hot water

 

2)Instructions to Make Kabsa

  • Firstly, fry onions in a pot until they turn golden brown.
  • Secondly, add garlic, tomatoes, and carrots, and simmer for a few more minutes.
  • Thirdly, add the chicken and brown it all over, then add salt, dried limes, and Kabsa spice blend.
  • Fourthly, add boiling water to the pan, cover it, and simmer until the meat is cooked.
  • Fifthly, add the almonds, raisins, and rice to the saucepan, cover, and simmer until the rice is soft and until the rice  completely absorb the water.
  • Finally, when the rice is fluffy, Kabsa is ready.

 

Pro Tip: For a smoky flavor, toss in a bit of charcoal when adding the rice. Then, before serving, cover and set aside for a few minutes.
