Discover First Vertical Farm inside Saudi Markets

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) has launched the first urban vertical farm inside food markets and stores, reported Saudi Press Agency (SPA). The vertical farm allows customers to directly obtain fresh vegetables and fruits from stores and markets.

Danube markets in Riyadh are honored to host the urban farm which is the first of its kind in the region. The commercial units showcase a variety of plants and agricultural products, for instance, broccoli, parsley, lettuce, and coriander. The Kingdom managed to import most of these products from abroad.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Eng. Ahmed Al-Eyada, attended the launch. The initiative was implemented by one of the pioneering bioagriculture companies using artificial intelligence and modern technologies.

The Ministry is poised to establish approximately 600 to 1,000 urban farms in the retail system covering all markets in the kingdom over the next five years. This will be coupled with ambitious goals to meet 20% to 40 % of domestic demand for agricultural products and vegetables.

Vertical farming is a revolutionary concept that aims to maximize food production in urban areas, making efficient use of limited land and resources. With ongoing advancements, vertical farming can play a critical role in achieving global food security and sustainable development goals by providing locally grown, nutritious food. It offers increased food production capacity and enhances water security through the use of efficient irrigation systems. Moreover, it reduces the dependence on pesticides, promoting healthier and safer food production.

In expanding this concept, Saudi Arabia is not just improving people’s health and lifestyle, it is, in fact, crafting a vision for a more sustainable future.
