Fruit and vegetable markets and some stores in Al-Ahsa Governorate have flourished these days with the Hasawi berry fruit, with its small grains, red and black color, and spherical size. They are in high demand as they are among the most prominent agricultural products and crops that are planted in large numbers on the lands of Al-Ahsa.
This attractive fruit, known for its shape and color, is found in many homes or hanging from branches outside. It’s a staple in Al-Ahsa’s food basket, renowned for its variety of fruits and vegetables all season long. Berries last around a month, emerging after cold waves give way to summer breezes.
These days, pickers and harvesters are gathering berries as the late winter season progresses. The berries stand out with their red color, occasionally shifting to blue or purple, developing a pleasant, sweet taste as they mature. However, they turn sour during the initial stages of growth and color change, despite the attention this tree receives. Before farmers, there are those who believe that its quantities are small in addition to its production.
Dr. Hussam Al-Din Hussein Mahmoud, a Professor of Fruit Science at King Faisal University in Al-Ahsa, pointed out to berries’ seasonal nature and high prices. Al-Ahsa farms yield red berries during the early summer, with a production period of around one month. Varieties include Hasawi blackberries, raspberries, Iranian, Kashmiri, and American berries. Efforts at the University’s College of Agriculture and Food Sciences aim to document all fruit varieties in Al-Ahsa, including berries.
Dr. Mahmoud highlighted the numerous benefits of berries, packed with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They also aid in controlling blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Berries contain high levels of anthocyanin compounds, powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties, lowering disease risks and boosting immune and digestive systems. They also reduce cardiovascular risks, lower cholesterol, maintain healthy skin, regulate heartbeat, aid in diuresis, and treat digestive disorders.
