AlUla Tram: One of Many Saudi Environment Friendly Projects

The Kingdom continues its pursuit to contribute to saving nature from global warming resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels.

This is through its grand green projects and the transformation of Saudi cities into cities free of exhaust and harmful carbon emissions.

Moreover, the transport sector has been bolstered with smart, innovative, and safe methods. A 500 million euro contract was recently signed with the leading French company ‘Alstom’ to construct AlUla Tram.

How big is AlUla Tram?

This tram includes 20 advanced ‘Citadis B’ model battery-operated trams, making it the world’s longest cable-free tram line.

In this regard, the British magazine ‘railway gazette’ highlighted the details of the project. It spans 22.4 kilometers and connects 17 strategically located stations. Therefore, it ensures smooth access to the five main historical areas in AlUla.

Thus, passengers will enjoy a journey that encapsulates AlUla’s deep historical connection with an authentic visual experience from the oasis to the desert, capturing the essence of past pilgrimage journeys.

Alstom’s role in the project

The magazine pointed out that the French company will be responsible for the comprehensive design, integration, installation, testing, and operation of the system. This will include power supplies, signals, communications, equipment for warehouses. The company will design and build 20 battery-operated trams  in La Rochelle, France.

Moreover, the designing company will provide complete maintenance for the tram for ten years. It will  use ‘Health Hub’s predictive maintenance tool and fleet management, along with a mobile workshop designed for flexibility and cost reduction.

Alstom will also provide training programs for Saudis interested in tram maintenance to take over after the ten-year contract.

The project will open in the second half of 2027, as part of the ‘360 Mobility’ sustainable transport plan. The plan includes cycling, equestrianism, pedestrian travel, electric buses, and autonomous capsules.

It added that the project is unique because it combines sustainability with passenger experience and immersion in a region rich in history and breathtaking landscapes.

It is noteworthy that Alstom France has supported the Haramain High-Speed Rail connecting Mecca and Medina.
