Syria Appoints New Ambassador to Saudi Arabia
Syria has appointed a new ambassador to Saudi Arabia, signaling the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two Arab nations after a break that lasted for more than a decade.
Official Announcement
The Syrian state news agency, SANA, reported on Wednesday (6 December 2023) that “Dr. Ayman Sousan took the legal oath before President Bashar al-Assad, as the Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic to Saudi Arabia.”
Dr. Mohamed Ayman Sousan: Diplomat, Politician
Dr. Mohamed Ayman Sousan is a Syrian diplomat and politician. Since 2014, he has been serving as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in Syria. Prior to this, he held the position of the Syrian Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union until 2012. He also holds a Ph.D. in International Relations.
Presidential Decree in 2014
In 2014, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree appointing Dr. Mohamed Ayman Sousan Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
In this role, Sousan oversaw the work of some departments and divisions within the Ministry. He also represented Syria in a number of international events.
Saudi Arabia’s Diplomatic Move
Last April, Saudi Arabia announced the resumption of its diplomatic mission in Syria. This decision, highlighting “brotherly ties,” aims to develop joint efforts. It takes into account the decision from the Council of Arab Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Cairo on May 7, 2023.
Arab League’s Decision
The Saudi decision followed a unanimous vote at two emergency ministerial meetings of the Arab League at the level of Arab foreign ministers, to restore Syria’s seat in the Arab League.
Preceding Consultations
Before this, a consultative meeting took place in Amman. Foreign ministers from Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Egypt participated. The meeting’s focus was the return of Syrian refugees and extending Syrian state control over its territory.
Gulf Cooperation Council Meeting
In mid-April, a meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council was held in Jeddah, with the participation of Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan, to discuss Syria’s return to the Arab League.
Historic Visit
Days after the Jeddah meeting, Saudi Foreign Minister visited Damascus. This was the first official Saudi visit to Syria since the interruption of relations 12 years ago.
