Imam Turki Royal Reserve Secures UNESCO Biosphere Recognition

The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve Development Authority has become the first Saudi royal reserve to officially join UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

This prestigious international recognition stands as a testament to the Kingdom’s dedication to safeguarding its natural environments and reinforcing its global position in biodiversity conversation and sustainable development.

Prince Turki bin Mohammed, the authority’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, said that this significant milestone is not only an environmental achievement but also a global testament to the Kingdom’s excellence in introducing an exceptional national model for managing royal reserves.

The prince noted that this model combines the site’s authenticity with innovative conservation methods, highlighting the concept of sustainable development.

Moreover, he stressed that that the Saudi Crown Prince’s guidance and support have played a pivotal role in the progress and development achieved in the Kingdom’s protected areas sector.

Launched in 1971, UNESCO‘s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program seeks to promote the sustainable use of biodiversity and protect ecosystems through strict scientific standards for nature reserves worldwide.

The program also aims to boost the relationship between people and their environment, track changes in the biosphere resulting from human activity, and mitigate harmful impacts.
