Environment Min., UN Hold National Consultative Workshop on KSA’s Environment
Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, in collaboration with the United Nations (UN), held the National Consultative Workshop on KSA’s Environmental Situation in Riyadh.
Notably, the workshop lasted over two days, February 7th and 8th. It was attended by the Ministry’s Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs, Dr. Osama Faqeeha.
Additionally, the Regional Representative of the United Nations Environment Program, Mr. Sami Dimasi, attended the workshop.
National Consultative Workshop’s Aims
The National Consultative Workshop addressed the objectives of the Kingdom’s State of the Environment Report including:
- Providing reliable and up-to-date information on environmental status and trends.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of national policies, procedures, and initiatives for environmental protection and management.
- Identifying gaps, challenges, and opportunities.
- Providing recommendations and innovative, practical solutions to improve the environment and enhance sustainable development.
- Improving stakeholder awareness and collaboration on environmental issues for Vision 2030 goals.
National Consultative Workshop’s Topics of Discussion
Discussions at the workshop covered the institutional and legislative framework of the environmental sector.
Furthermore, it tackled the environmental situation before the development of the environmental strategy.
Additionally, it addressed amendments made to the sector, efforts to preserve the environment, atmospheric phenomena, and air quality.
Moreover, the discussion includes water resources, vegetation cover, land use, marine, coastal environments, biodiversity, waste, and climate change.
What Was Reviewed in Workshop?
The National Consultative Workshop reviewed environmental databases and indicators over the past five years.
Notably, the databases aided in identifying environmental issues and enhancing environmental performance.
Additionally, the databases highlighted scientific research efforts in the environmental sector.
This represents a pivotal step in addressing environmental challenges and enhancing efforts to address climate change challenges.
Additionally, the workshop highlighted national efforts to boost environmental awareness through diverse media and governmental channels.
This falls within the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture’s international efforts to improve environmental quality, aligned with the National Environment Strategy and Vision 2030.
