Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Commerce has announced new regulations to regulate influencer marketing in the Kingdom.
The ministry issued a warning for businesses which promote celebrities visiting Saudi Arabia with visitor visas unless they hold a “Mouathaq” (trusted) license issued by the General Authority for Media Regulation.
Therefore, the new regulations demand any commercial advertisement featuring influencers to be properly authorized.
The new rule aims to ensure that businesses perfectly comply with legal advertising standards.
Moreover, it assures that media activity in Saudi Arabia aligns with the Kingdom’s established media law.
In the light of this, the “Mouathaq” license is currently mandatory for influencers whether they are residents or visitors.
The Ministry also noted that the license applies to both content creators and influencers regardless of their residency status.
Furthermore, the General Authority for Media Regulation has placed certain criteria for obtaining the license.
In order to be licensed, foreign investors and residents must meet these requirements:
- Obtaining a commercial registration
- Owning at least 50% of a registered advertising agency or marketing firm involved in visual, audio or digital media
