The Saudi Space Agency has on Thursday concluded its fruitful participation in the World Space Week, held from October 4-10, 2024, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The event is celebrated each year. It coincides with the anniversary of first satellite launch and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty, which laid the foundation for the peaceful use of space.
World Space Week
Under the theme Space and Climate Change, the World Space Week highlighted the role of space technologies in tackling this global challenge.
During the World Space Week, the Saudi Space Agency launched a social media campaign, featuring interactive content. It also dedicated a page on its website for providing information and education materials to enhance children’s and students’ awareness on space.
Training Future Cadres
In line with the World Space Week campaign, the Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) at the Saudi Space Agency received more than 60 students from three universities, to enhance scientific awareness and increase the knowledge of space sciences and technologies.
As a result, students learned about the technical aspects of designing space missions through educational workshops and training on concurrent design skills. These efforts contribute to qualifying national cadres in the Saudi space sector.
Enhancing Space Knowledge
Furthermore, experts from the Saudi Space Agency took part in panel discussions organized by prominent Saudi universities, such as King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, King Abdulaziz University, Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University, and Prince Sultan University.
These panel discussions aimed to enhance the students’ academic knowledge and inspire them to explore new horizons in the fields of space science and technology.
Moreover, the Saudi Space Agency participated in the NASA Space Apps Challenge hakathon, which aims to foster innovation and empower entrepreneurs.
Importance of Space Technologies
The Saudi Space Agency participation concluded with a live interview with the Saudi astronaut Ali Al-Qarni, who talked about the importance of the space sector in combating climate change and the role of space technologies in addressing this challenge.
The participation of the Saudi Space Agency aligns with its efforts to establish the Kingdom’s status as a leader in the space sector and to utilize space technologies to address environmental challenges and achieve sustainable development goals.
