During a visit to the United States, Abdullah Al-Swaha, the Saudi Minister of Communications and Information Technology and chairman of the Saudi Space Commission, met with NASA Administrator Bill Nelson to discuss future collaborations. During the meeting with NASA, both sides explored potential joint ventures in space exploration, artificial intelligence, and the digital economy. This collaboration aims to drive technological progress in Saudi Arabia, fostering science and entrepreneurship within the Kingdom. Al-Swaha also met with Princess Reema bint Bandar, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the US, and leaders from the American Chamber of Commerce. These talks delved into investment opportunities between the two countries, strengthening their shared focus on innovation.
Boosting Saudi Youth and Women in Technology
Al-Swaha praised Saudi students in Washington for their contributions to the country’s competitiveness in science and technology. He noted the growing participation of women, with a remarkable 35 percent presence in the tech sector, surpassing averages in both the EU and G20 countries. Initiatives like the Misk Foundation’s “Saudi Codes” program have trained over one million women and youth in programming.
Saudi Arabia’s International Leadership
Al-Swaha highlighted the Kingdom’s achievements at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, held in New York. Saudi Arabia ranked fourth globally in the UN E-Government Development Index 2024, showcasing its leadership in digital services. The Kingdom also collaborates with the UN’s International Telecommunication Union to bridge the digital divide, impacting 2.6 billion people without access to digital solutions.
Digital Economy and Healthcare Innovations
During the summit, Saudi Arabia showcased its groundbreaking virtual hospital, which has performed specialized surgeries worldwide. Al-Swaha also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to advancing the digital economy, proposing the establishment of the Digital Cooperation Organization. This initiative aims to create a unified digital market serving over 800 million people, promoting innovation in healthcare, education, and business.
Saudi Recommendations for AI and Digital Future
Saudi Arabia presented seven key recommendations to the UN for bridging gaps in artificial intelligence. These include forming an independent international scientific committee on AI and establishing a platform for sharing best practices and standards. Al-Swaha emphasized the Kingdom’s leadership in addressing the challenges of the digital age, working toward a common digital future for all.
