Saudi Statistics Chief Highlights Data, AI Integration at Global Data Festival

Saudi Arabia’s chief statistician used a major international data summit in Kenya to promote preparations for the 2026 United Nations World Data Forum in Riyadh and to highlight the Kingdom’s efforts to integrate artificial intelligence, geospatial information and statistical systems in support of sustainable development.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) President Fahad Al-Dossari led the Saudi delegation to the Global Data Festival, held in Nairobi from June 2 to 5. The event brought together government officials, statisticians, technology experts and development partners from around the world to examine the growing role of data and emerging technologies in addressing global challenges.

Speaking at the festival’s closing ceremony, Al-Dossari reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to strengthening data and statistical systems, fostering innovation and expanding international cooperation through advanced technologies. He said the integration of official statistics, geospatial information and artificial intelligence would play a critical role in addressing development challenges and enhancing decision-making processes.

On the sidelines of the festival, Al-Dossari met with representatives of international organizations and national statistical agencies to discuss preparations for the UN World Data Forum, scheduled to take place in Riyadh from Nov. 9 to 12, 2026. Discussions also focused on the “Road to Riyadh” initiative and efforts to align outcomes from the Nairobi gathering with preparations for the global forum.

Al-Dossari also held talks with Jenna Slotin, chief executive officer of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, to review arrangements for the Riyadh forum and explore opportunities for future cooperation.

The Nairobi gathering marked the first time the Global Data Festival has been hosted in Africa, highlighting Kenya’s growing standing as a regional hub for technology and innovation.

Organizers said the summit attracted more than 1,500 delegates and was held alongside the Kenya Space Expo and Conference. Additionally, discussions centered on the use of data, artificial intelligence and space technologies to address climate change, food security and economic growth.

Kenya’s Economic Planning Department said participants from approximately 90 countries attended the event under the theme, “Powering Resilience, Innovation, and Partnership through Data and Technology.”

The festival was opened by Kenya’s Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who called for stronger international partnerships to unlock the potential of artificial intelligence and Earth observation technologies in agriculture, climate resilience and economic development.

Kenyan officials also used the event to showcase efforts by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics to modernize data collection and analysis through satellite imagery, real-time analytics and other digital technologies.
