Riyadh Resets the Calendar for Asia’s Indoor and Martial Arts Games

Riyadh’s preparations for the 6th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games are entering a revised timeline, with the continental multi-sport event now scheduled for March 28 to April 8, 2027, instead of December 11–21, 2026.

A Revised Timeline for Asian Competition

Announced by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Games’ Local Organizing Committee through the Saudi Press Agency, the postponement comes on the heels of a joint review of organizational and logistical requirements in coordination with relevant authorities, Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and international sports federations.

The revised schedule seeks to streamline logistical arrangements, align competing schedules, and support wider participation.

Both organizing bodies have reaffirmed Riyadh’s readiness to host the Games, stating that preparations continue according to approved plans.

How Will the New Timeline Help?

By revising the schedule, organizers and participating delegations will have a new timeframe for coordinating preparations, travel, and participation arrangements.

The change also highlights the importance of logistical planning and international coordination in delivering a multi-sport event of continental scale.

For Saudi Arabia, the Games form part of a broader effort to expand its presence on the international sporting stage.

The Kingdom has hosted numerous international sporting events in recent years, while its wider development strategy seeks to diversify the economy, attract visitors, and strengthen Riyadh’s position as a destination for major international events.

Riyadh Expands Its Sporting Portfolio

Standing out as one of the Olympic Council of Asia’s major multi-sport events, the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games bring together athletes from across the continent to compete in disciplines spanning indoor athletics, swimming, muay thai, jiu-jitsu, kurash, and esports.

The sixth edition in Riyadh further enriches Saudi Arabia’s growing portfolio of international sporting events.

The Kingdom is also gearing up to host the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and the 2034 FIFA World Cup, alongside the Asian Winter Games in Trojena and international competitions across motorsport and combat sports.

Together, these events reflect the breadth of Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to establish itself as a destination for major global sporting competitions.

Riyadh Reaffirms Its Readiness

The revised dates are expected to give organizers greater flexibility in coordinating competition calendars, travel, and accommodation, while creating more opportunities for Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to participate with full delegations.

Both the Olympic Council of Asia and the Local Organizing Committee have reaffirmed Riyadh’s readiness to host the Games, emphasizing that organizational and operational preparations remain on track under approved plans.

They have also reiterated their commitment to delivering the event successfully and welcoming participating delegations to the Saudi capital in March 2027.

The announcement did not specify any changes to the scope of the Games, its venues, its sports program, or qualification arrangements.
