Saudi Arabia took part in the 5th edition of the G20 Space Economy Leaders Meeting, held in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The Saudi Space Agency (SSA) represented the Kingdom in the meeting, taking place from September 11-13, 2024. The Saudi delegation was led by the CEO of SSA, Dr. Mohammed Al-tamimi.
Space Economy
With the participation of G20 member countries’ space agencies, representatives of invited countries, and heads of international and regional organizations, the meeting discussed enhancing the global role of space economy and promoting its contributions to addressing environmental challenges.
Moreover, it explored ways to leverage space science and technology to address these challenges and achieve sustainable development goals.
During his speech, the CEO of the SSA, Dr. Mohammed Al-tamimi, emphasized that the theme of this year’s meeting, “Space Economy and Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities,” highlights the pivotal role of the space sector in tackling global environmental challenges. It also underscores the space sector’s great contributions to improving the quality of life on Earth.
Saudi Arabia’s Space Efforts
Al-tamimi thanked Brazil, represented by CEO of the Brazilian Space Agency, Marco Antonio Chamon, for their efforts in organizing the fifth edition of the Space Economy Leaders Meeting.
Furthermore, he noted that Saudi Arabia is working to enhance the global role of space economy. This includes launching the Center for Space Futures, in partnership with the World Economic Forum (WEF). The Center serves as a catalyst for international cooperation, innovation and economic opportunities in the space sector.
Additionally, Al-tamimi stressed Saudi Arabia’s belief that investment in space is essential for the development of humanity.
The Space Economy Leaders Meeting is one of the outcomes of Saudi Arabia’s presidency of the G20. The Kingdom included it on the agenda for the first time.
Through this meeting, Saudi Arabia aims to enhance space collaboration between nations to maximize the benefits of the space economy, as well as the use of space data in supporting sustainable development, food security and global health.
