The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) emphasizes the importance of voluntary recalls, which food establishments proactively initiate to remove products from the market when defects are detected or suspected. These recalls play a vital role in safeguarding consumer health and upholding food safety and quality standards.
SFDA highlights that voluntary recalls are a globally recognized practice carried out under regulatory oversight to protect consumers. However, this action does not exempt establishments from legal responsibility for any damages caused by the product, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

By conducting voluntary recalls, businesses demonstrate their commitment to food safety, regulatory compliance, and customer well-being, as well as their dedication to maintaining their reputation.
Food establishments may initiate voluntary recalls for various reasons, including:
- Product contamination.
- Quality deficiencies or failure to meet approved standards.
- Errors in nutritional labeling or product information.
- Packaging or manufacturing defects that pose health risks or compromise safety.

Once an establishment notifies SFDA of its intent to conduct a recall, the authority oversees the process to ensure compliance with approved standards. The notification must include details such as the reason for the recall, the quantity of affected products, the distribution scope, and the procedures to be followed. SFDA monitors the recall to verify the removal of unsafe products from the market.
If an official warning is required, SFDA will acknowledge the establishment’s initiative and outline the corrective actions taken.
Finally, food establishments can contact SFDA immediately via the unified call number 19999 or email alert.food@sfda.gov.sa for assistance.
