Switzerland Blocks Two US Overflights Linked to Iran Conflict

The Swiss government unveiled on Saturday that it had reviewed requests from U.S. military and official aircraft to traverse Swiss airspace, according to Reuters.

The government rejected two overflight requests directly linked to the current Middle East conflict involving Iran, upholding its longstanding neutrality laws.

Meanwhile, Bern granted permission for three others, specifically two transport aircraft and one maintenance aircraft.

“The law on neutrality prohibits overflights by parties to the conflict that serve a military purpose related to the conflict,” the government said in a statement.

The statement further noted that exceptions are made for humanitarian and medical missions, including the transport of wounded individuals, as well as for flights that are unrelated to the tensions.

Switzerland also declared that it would deny any future overflight requests if they exceed normal air traffic levels or if the Swiss government could not determine the purpose of the flights.

On February 28, the the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.

Iran has been responding with a retaliatory counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi as a retaliatory move, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.

One of the US-Israel strikes had killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His killing has raised critical questions concerning Iran’s future.
