Zelensky Says Russia Supplying Iran with Shahed Drones

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia is providing Iran with Shahed drones for use in its attacks against the United States and Israel, according to an excerpt from a CNN interview aired on Saturday.

Zelenskyy said it is “100 percent facts” that Iran has deployed Russian-made Shahed drones in attacks on US bases, Arab News reported.

Shahed drones have been associated with several other attacks in the region, though their exact manufacturers are clearly identified.

The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.

Iran has been responding with a retaliatory counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi as a retaliatory move, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.

One of the US-Israel strikes had killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His killing has raised critical questions concerning Iran’s future.

Iran developed the Shahed drone as a far less expensive alternative to costly missiles. These weapons were first used on a large scale during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where Russian forces have launched thousands of them since the fall of 2022, according to Ukrainian officials.

Despite the fact that Iran is the country which initially supplied the drones, Russia now manufactures its own versions of the Shahed.

Other militaries, including the US, have adopted similar drones with Washington announcing that they are being used in the current campaign against Iran.
