SFD Attends Launch of Potable Water Project in Tanzania’s Same, Mwanga Districts

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), represented by its Director General of Africa Operations, Mohammed bin Adhahan Alshammari, participated in the inauguration ceremony of the Drinking Water Supply Project for Same and Mwanga Districts in the United Republic of Tanzania. The event was held in the presence of Tanzanian President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, alongside Tanzanian Minister of Water Jumaa Hamidu Aweso and Saudi Ambassador to Tanzania Yahya bin Ahmed Okeish.

Funded by the SFD through a $25 million concessional development loan, the project aims to establish a comprehensive drinking water transmission network. This includes the installation of over 160 kilometers of main pipelines and the construction of a 7,500-cubic-meter water reservoir to provide water to households in 16 villages. Additionally, the project involves the development of three water reservoirs in Same town and the implementation of household connections to ensure access to clean drinking water for communities across the region.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance the availability and quality of drinking water in both urban and rural areas, improve public health, and reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases. By addressing critical water infrastructure needs, the project contributes to achieving sustainable water security in Tanzania.

Since 1987, the SFD has supported Tanzania’s development by financing eight projects and programs through concessional loans totaling over $92 million. These investments span key sectors such as transportation, water, agriculture, and social infrastructure, playing a vital role in advancing the country’s social development and economic prosperity.
