Saudi Foreign Minister Discusses Gaza with British Counterpart

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister Faisal bin Farhan and his British counterpart David Cameron discussed developments in Gaza Strip in a phone call.

Bin Farhan received the call from Cameron during which they discussed the bilateral relations and regional and international issues. The two ministers confirmed earlier that it is important for the international community, especially permanent members of the Security Council, including the United Kingdom, to bear their responsibilities.

These responsibilities include increasing efforts to achieve ceasefire, establishing safe corridors to deliver medical, humanitarian and food relief to Gaza and create suitable environment for stability and peace. A comprehensive and just peace path will guarantee the Palestinian people their legitimate rights.

The UN Security Council passed resolution no.2728 on Monday calling for a ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan. Fourteen countries voted in favor to none against while the United States of America abstained.

The vote came as a shock to Israel, which saw its decades-long American ally abstain from voting rather than veto the move, as it has consistently done

This resolution follows an earlier US resolution issued last Friday that called for a ceasefire in Gaza. China, Algeria and Russia voted against the resolution in the UN Security Council; while eleven members voted in favor of it. Since China and Russia are permanent member in the council, their votes were considered as vetoes.

While the United States says the latest resolution is non-binding, experts disagree on whether this is the case or not. They say that the key is in the language of the document.

During the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s ministerial meeting, Bin Farhan expressed dismay over the global failure to stop Gaza’s violence. Moreover, he warned against diminishing UNRWA‘s key role in Palestine

Last February, the two ministers met on the sidelines of the 2024 Munich Security Conference and  discussed the latest developments in Gaza and the international efforts in this regard.

Before that, in January, they met on the sideline of the World Economic Forum’s 2024 Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland. They discussed regional events and their effect on global peace and security.

Three weeks ago, Bin Farhan received a phone call from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. They discussed developments in Gaza and its surroundings, and the efforts being made to deal with its security and humanitarian consequences.
