Saudi Arabia is offering a special system using GPS and interactive digital maps to help pilgrims move around the holy sites, reported Saudi Press Agency.
The General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque has provided the system in preparation for the Hajj season.
The digital interactive map service aims to make it easier for those visiting the Grand Mosque to move around it. It identifies the locations of religious rituals and its main landmarks, including the “Mattaf” area and the “Sa’ay” area and shows directions to these areas.
It also shows directions to all the facilities provided by the General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque. These facilities include doors, the library, restrooms, guidance offices, and the service of providing manual and electric carts, escalators, elevators, field hospitals, bridges, and maintenance and work areas.
Moreover, there are 200 QR codes distributed throughout the Grand Mosque which enable pilgrims to determine their location and choose their desired destination using mobile phones with two the systems-IOS and android.
Taking into account the diversity among pilgrims, the digital interactive map offers several international languages, including Arabic, English, French, Urdu, Indonesian, Turkish, and others.
The General Administration of Survey and Geographic Information Systems at the Grand Mosque has provided a multilingual paper guide that is distributed among pilgrims by hand. The system complements the role of the guide boards printed on the walls of the Grand Mosque which enable pilgrims to perform the rituals easily.
