Saudi Arabia Adopts New Technology to Purify Drinking Water

Saudi company DRC-ChemTec has signed an agreement with Stockholm Water Technology to adopt a new technology on purifying drinking water, according to Arab News.

The agreement seeks to expand the range of the new technology across Saudi Arabia over the next four years.

Known as a capacitive deionization technique, the new water technology will treat approximately 3,500 cubic meters of water daily and provide clean drinking water.

In addition, the Swedish company has presented a proposal to use the new technology in treating wastewater in the Kingdom and reusing it for agriculture.

The company also noted that this suggestion involves an organized plan to remove micropollutants such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals and other chemicals from treated wastewater.

Promising Technology

Interestingly, the technology removes contaminants without any need for membrane filters or chemical treatment through the passage of an electrical current through water.

“Saudi Arabia’s water treatment market is at the forefront of sustainable practices, driven by the urgent need for clean, safe water across industries and a growing focus on water recycling and reuse,” said Karthik Laxman, CEO of Stockholm Water Technology.

Importantly, the Swedish company will supply 1,750 of its systems.

At the beginning, it will greatly focus on providing drinking water.

Consequently, it will work on industrial and municipal wastewater treatment.

As for DRC-ChemTec, the company will install the technology and manufacture associated parts to boost local production.

“DRC foresees strong growth in the residential and industrial segments, where the flexibility of SWT water treatment systems will provide unique value to customers,” Husam Aljarba, strategic business development director at DRC-ChemTec, said.
