Defending Arab Sovereignty: Saudi Arabia’s Firm Stand on Syrian Golan Heights

Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed its unwavering stance on Arab sovereignty, defending the legal status of the Golan Heights as occupied Syrian Arab territory.

The Kingdom’s reiteration of this position came in response to Colombia’s decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, a move that Riyadh described as a violation of international law and relevant UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.

Golan Remains Arab Land

Driving the News: Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry voiced the Kingdom’s strong condemnation of the Colombian move, which contradicts UNSC resolutions, particularly Resolution 497 (1981), which declared Israel‘s extension of laws and jurisdiction over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights null and void, and without legal effect.

The Big Picture: The Kingdom stressed its position that the Golan Heights are occupied Syrian Arab territory and that any attempts to alter its status carry no legal weight or legitimacy. It urged the Colombian government to reverse its decision, abide by international law, and support broader efforts toward a just and lasting regional peace.

Why It Matters: In a statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry warned that Colombia’s decision undermines peace efforts, departs from long-standing international consensus regarding the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, and entrenches the logic of unilateral actions in the region.

The Colombian Move

The Context: On Monday, August 10, 2026, the Colombian Foreign Ministry announced Bogota’s recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan as well as its “right to protect itself against external threats.”

Flashback: Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and extended its laws and administration to the territory in 1981 – a move not recognized by most of the international community. UNSC Resolution 497 declared the Israeli move “null and void and without international legal effect.” The US was the only country to formally recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan in 2019.

The Pivot: The Colombian recognition took place a few days after far-right President Abelardo de la Espriella assumed office. It came in a stark departure from the position of the outgoing leftist president, Gustavo Petro, who sharply criticized Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, severed diplomatic ties, and halted Israeli arms imports to Colombia.

Syrian Protest

State of Play: Syria has categorically rejected Colombia’s decision, formally protesting to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UNSC president, reported the Syrian state news agency SANA. Moreover, the Syrian Foreign Ministry denounced the Colombian move, reiterating that the Golan Heights are an integral part of its territory.

Between the Lines: During a landmark visit to Syria last month, the UN chief reaffirmed that the Golan Heights are Syrian territory, rejecting Israeli actions around the area as “totally unacceptable.”

Arab Consensus on Sovereignty

Go Deeper: Arab and Muslim nations, as well as major regional bodies, have echoed a similar stance to Riyadh. The foreign ministries of Qatar, Oman, Egypt, Jordan, and Türkiye issued separate statements strongly condemning the Colombian decision.

Furthermore, the Secretaries-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the Arab League (AL), and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) rejected the move, stressing that the Golan Heights remain occupied Syrian territory in accordance with international law and international legitimacy resolutions.

A Non-Negotiable Pillar

Zoom In: Saudi Arabia is a steadfast supporter of Syria’s sovereignty and stability. Riyadh has spearheaded efforts to re-engage Damascus and end Syria’s regional and global isolation after the fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, categorically rejecting Israeli incursions into Syrian territories.

The Strategy: Saudi Arabia’s position aligns with its longstanding policy regarding state sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Kingdom has consistently supported legitimate state institutions and rejected any attempts to undermine the security and stability of countries.

Palestine

Saudi Arabia has championed the establishment of an independent Palestinian State on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. To this end, the Kingdom has spearheaded global initiatives to mobilize support for Palestinian Statehood, including the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution and the International Conference for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution.

It has also warned against any attempts to alter Jerusalem’s status quo or identity, while stressing that a two-state solution is the only path to peace. Riyadh has also voiced its strong opposition to expanding illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank and annexation efforts.

Lebanon

The Kingdom has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Lebanon‘s security, stability, and territorial integrity, while emphasizing the role of official state institutions and the army in safeguarding national sovereignty. It has also rejected external interference that fuels political fragmentation or compromises Lebanon’s standing within the Arab fold.

Sudan

Riyadh has advocated for preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and state institutions against internal fragmentation or parallel government structures. It has also spearheaded peace efforts, including the Jeddah Declaration, to protect civilian lives, facilitate humanitarian access, and reach a political solution to the conflict.

Yemen

Saudi Arabia has reiterated its unwavering support for the legitimate Yemeni government and regional and international efforts aimed at achieving security, stability, and peace in Yemen under international law and relevant UN resolutions, notably UNSC 2216.

Moreover, Riyadh has advocated for inclusive political dialogue under UN auspices to restore security, end militia-driven destabilization, and secure vital Red Sea maritime corridors.

The Bottom Line: Saudi Arabia’s rejection of Colombia’s decision on the Golan reflects its broader foreign policy doctrine, one that is deeply anchored in adherence to international law, respect for state borders, and the preservation of national sovereignty to achieve enduring regional security.
