In recognition of water’s importance to human life, the world marks the World Water Day on March 22 of each year. Saudi Arabia joins the celebration as one of the largest water producers across the globe.
World Water Day
On December 22, 1992, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/47/193 and declared the 22nd of March as World Water Day. In 1993, the UN General Assembly established the day as an annual event to raise public awareness about the importance of water and the need to protect it.
Under the theme “Glacier Preservation,” the world observes the World Water Day 2025. It aims to highlight the significance of glaciers for drinking water, agriculture, industry, clean energy production and healthy ecosystems.
Hence, the World Water Day 2025 focuses on working out plans and strategies to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to shrinking glaciers to tackle the global water crisis resulting from climate change.
Saudi Arabia’s Leadership in Water Desalination
Saudi Arabia is a pioneer in the water sector, harnessing advanced innovations and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in water desalination, raising operational efficiency and reducing environmental impacts, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Moreover, the Kingdom develops advanced solutions using palm trees to combat erosion and extend the lifespan of vital water infrastructure. These innovations further establish Saudi Arabia’s position as a global hub for water technologies. They also underscore the Kingdom’s solid commitment to sustainability and environment protection, and its adaptability to climate change.
Saudi Water Authority Efforts
In the light of this, the Saudi Water Authority, working under the supervision of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, plays a key role in the organization and planning process which ensures the water sector’s sustainability, adherence to standards, and service’s quality.
Furthermore, the Saudi Water Authority cooperates with all relevant agencies to redefine the concept of sustainable water management, ensuring Saudi Arabia’s continued leadership as a global model in the efficient management of water resources, despite its scarcity.
This is evident in the Saudi Water Authority’s supervision of the production of over 15 million cubic meters of water daily according to the best efficiency rates in energy consumption as well as capital and operational costs.
The produced water is then transported through a vast 14,000-kilometer transmission network and pumped via a comprehensive 135,000-kilometer distribution system that covers all the Kingdom’s regions.
