Iran President to Visit Pakistan Following Tehran-Washington Talks in Switzerland

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will visit Pakistan on Tuesday, following recent Tehran-Washington talks held in Switzerland and mediated by Islamabad and Doha, according to Al-Arabiya English.

The visit will provide Pezeshkian with a unique opportunity to express Iran’s appreciation to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his mediation efforts between Tehran and Washington, Habibollah Abbasi, director of public relations at the president’s office, said.

New Round Talks

Pezeshkian’s visit comes on the heels of an extended round of talks in Switzerland between senior Iranian officials and their US counterparts amid a significant push towards a permanent peace deal.

On Sunday, talks between delegations led by US Vice President JD Vance and Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf officially kicked off, marking the beginning of a two-month negotiation process outlined by a preliminary agreement reached last Wednesday.

Mediators from Pakistan and Qatar announced that the two sides had agreed on a “roadmap” towards securing a final deal within 60 days, with technical-level negotiations set to continue throughout the rest of the week at the Swiss resort.

War in Iran

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.

Iran has been responding with a retaliatory counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.

The conflict spread across the Middle East, leaving thousands dead and triggering unprecedented disruptions to energy supplies especially after the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

On Wednesday, Iran and the United States signed an agreement to end the conflict, offering some relief and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday stated that ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz will not pay any transit or service fees during the current 60-day period.
