Egypt is home to a rich and diverse cultural heritage that spans traditional arts, crafts, music, cuisine, and sports. This legacy has received international recognition from UNESCO, with several elements inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Among these are hand-weaving, tahteeb (the traditional stick game), the epic Al-Sirah Al-Hilaliyyah, horse-related industries, the popular koshary dish, and the semsemiah musical instrument, which was registered through joint cooperation with Saudi Arabia.

Handicrafts and creative industries play a central role in Egypt’s historical identity, contributing significantly to both national industries and local economies.
Additionally, traditional pottery and ceramics showcase centuries-old craftsmanship, while the use of palm fronds in wicker production continues to be an important artisanal practice.

The semsemiah instrument stands as a living symbol of Egyptian identity, closely associated with moments of celebration and resistance, particularly in the Suez Canal region.
In 2024, its craftsmanship was jointly inscribed by Egypt and Saudi Arabia on UNESCO’s list, highlighting its cultural and historical significance.

Egypt’s culinary heritage further reflects this diversity, with iconic dishes such as ful medames, ta’ameya, and koshary.
Finally, the international recognition of koshary by UNESCO in 2025 underscores the growing global appreciation of Egypt’s rich cultural traditions.
