Significant Increase in Female Employment in Travel, Tourism

 The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and the Global Center for Sustainable Tourism (STGC) revealed that the global travel and tourism sector is increasingly providing job opportunities for women and youth around the world. 47 million women are globally working in the tourism sector.

Significant Increase in Female Employment in Travel, Tourism

The report shows a rapid increase in the employment of women in the travel and tourism sector between 2010 and 2019, with numbers rising from 38.6 million to 47.8 million, an increase of 24%.

Hospitality: Leading Employer for Women in Sector

Hospitality emerges as the leading employment sector for women, representing over half of female employment within the field. The report also highlights the critical role of young workers in this sector, accounting for 15% of all jobs in both 2010 and 2021, according to SABQ Online Newspaper.

Importance of Travel for Youth Employment

In contrast, the share of young workers in total global employment decreased from 16.5% in 2010 to 12.5% between 2010-2021, underscoring the significance of travel and tourism in providing employment opportunities for the youth.

Julia Simpson, WTTC’s President and CEO, is proud to collaborate with the Global Center. Furthermore, she emphasized the sector’s global impact, notably its support for high-paying jobs, gender equality, and sustainable youth employment.

Higher Proportion of Female Employment

In 2021, the sector’s female employment rate was slightly higher than the global average (39.3% vs. 39.2%). Consequently, over half of the sector’s female workers (52%) were employed in hospitality in 2019.

Regional Employment Trends

Women hold a greater percentage of travel and tourism jobs than in the general workforce in Asia-Pacific and the Americas. Additionally, since 2010, there’s been an increase in female employment in African travel and tourism. Similarly, the Middle East has seen a significant rise in women’s employment across various economic sectors.

High-Paying Jobs

In 2021, about 34% of global travel and tourism jobs were high-paying, up from 29.6% in 2010. Regionally, Asia-Pacific led in high-paying sector jobs (38.7%), followed by Africa (36.2%) and the Americas (30.6%)
