European Parliament Adopts Law to Protect against Greenwashing
Overview European Parliament
The European Parliament has given its final approval to a new law aimed at preventing companies from misleading consumers about their environmental practices or the environmental benefits of a product or service.
Overview European Parliament
Members of the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of a directive designed to shield consumers from deceptive commercial practices and help them make better purchasing decisions.
The parliament stated, “To achieve this, a number of marketing practices associated with ‘greenwashing’ will be added to the European list of prohibited commercial practices.”
Curbing Greenwashing Phenomenon
The European Union aims to put an end to the phenomenon of greenwashing, where companies falsely claim to be more environmentally conscious than they actually are. Additionally, consumers will be provided with more accurate information about the characteristics of the products they purchase. The use of terms such as “eco-friendly,” “biodegradable,” and “climate-neutral” in advertisements or packaging will henceforth be banned without concrete evidence.
Restrictions on Misleading Environmental Claims
The directive effectively bans claims about a product’s “climate-neutral,” “low,” or “positive” environmental impact. Simultaneously, the EU welcomes corporate investments in climate projects. Yet, it will decisively stop firms from misleading people about products’ environmental goodness. Consequently, this marks a major win for the environment, climate, and consumers.
Focusing on Product Quality
Moreover, the new law aims to shift focus to product quality. Producers and consumers are the primary targets. Importantly, the directive’s approval followed lengthy EU and member state talks. These discussions centered on applying environmental claims. Ultimately, the law is crucial. It promotes transparency and honesty in environmental marketing. It leads consumers to make greener choices.
