Chasing Rain in Asir: Unusual ‘Umbrellas’ for Summer Showers
As August begins in the Asir region, the market for handmade umbrellas sees a surge. This rise in interest is not for sun protection but for enjoying walks in the rain, often with hail.
Amid the “spring-like” conditions brought on by the region’s heavy rains, most park-goers are eager to acquire the essentials for enjoying the constant rain showers. An umbrella, in particular, is a key priority for those who relish the cool and mild weather during the tough summer season in Asir.
August, which is considered the hottest month globally, presents an important opportunity for outdoor gear vendors in the Asir region to market their products, including small tents, manual umbrellas, and cooking utensils. However, the most prominent market these days is for umbrellas, which start at 15 riyals and can go up to 150 riyals depending on size and quality.
The Asir region is experiencing active movement in modern and innovative tourism projects aimed at transforming Asir into a leading global tourist destination and a center for entertainment and culture both within the Kingdom and beyond. This effort relies on its strengths, including its culture and nature that blend tradition and modernity, contributing to the social and economic growth of the region.
