‘The Perfumes of the East Exhibition’

The Arabian Peninsula has a distinctive everlasting relationship with perfumes. The Peninsula’s land has been an extraordinary source of perfumes, and a main station for receiving aromatic materials. The trade routes have empowered caravans to transport its fragrant scents to the societies of the ancient world, forming the real beginning of the history of perfumes.

In August, the Saudi National Museum hosted “The Perfumes of the East Exhibition” in Riyadh, in partnership with the Arab World Institute in Paris.

Designed to document and showcase the strong relationship between the Arab world and perfumes, the exhibition featured various scents of the East and delved into the Arab traditions that provided them with prestigious social significance.

Through numerous pavilions, the event explored how Arabic perfumes were distinguished by strong and warm scents offering an exceptional blend of different ingredients, including myrrh, frankincense, amber, oud, musk, as well as rose.

Furthermore, the exhibition showed the close connection between perfumes and significant religious and social occasions and how these blossoming scents became evidence of wealth and luxury.

Intended to take the visitors into an unforgettable journey, the exhibition featured over 200 outstanding artifacts and contemporary artworks with deep insights and backgrounds about each perfume’s story.

Hayy Jameel, Saudi Arabia’s dedicated home for arts, hosted Saudi artist Ahaad Alamoudi’s first solo exhibition in October, Arab News reported.

Titled “Moving Mountains,” the exhibition captured the attention of several artists and art lovers. It was based on an impressive short movie that deeply explores Alamoudi’s examination of fast-evolving social and cultural environments. Therefore, the exhibition portrayed a stunning image about the Kingdom’s natural and urban landscapes.

“(The exhibition) looks at change from different perspectives. The main work is called ‘Moving Mountains,’ which is a piece commissioned by Hayy Jameel. It looks at collective power and the individual power to bring about change, whether building something or forgetting something,” Alamoudi said.

In the light of this, Alamoudi has tackled several topics such as documentation and approaches in understanding the role of the present within an evolving future. She also discussed notions of past and present and navigating landscapes in flux.

In September, the Goethe-Institut in Riyadh launched “Echoes of Time,” a significant exhibition celebrating the 20th anniversary of DAI excavations in Saudi Arabia.

According to Arab News, the exhibition was basically inspired by the early magnificent archaeological exploration in Saudi Arabia.

In partnership with the German Embassy and the German Archaeological Institute, or DAI, in Berlin, the opening reception took place on Sept. 24 at 6:00 p.m. and highlighted the attendance of Michael Kindsgrab, the German ambassador to Saudi Arabia, along with several members from the German Embassy and DAI.

Curated by Salma Al-Khalidi, the exhibition showcased various artworks by Saudi artist Daniah Al-Saleh and German artist Susanne Kriemann.

“The Saudi art scene is fantastic. It’s alive and expanding, with numerous opportunities for artists thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture and the government,” Al-Saleh stated.

Furthermore, the event encouraged viewers to imagine the desert as a place where history meets modernity, stressing the significance of environmental stewardship in global discussions about history and ecology.

“It’s an amazing time to be an artist, especially with the backing of the German Archaeological Institute and the German Embassy. This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our work and collaborate with fellow artists,” Al-Saleh added.

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) hosted “The Camel Through the Ages” exhibition in September showcasing camel’s special place in the heart of Saudis, reported Ithra.

In collaboration with the Riyadh-based Layan Cultural Foundation (LCF), the event run until Nov. 1 featuring a year designated by the Ministry of Culture as the Year of the Camel.

Camels were a primary means of transportation across vast distances offering a good company to combat the isolation of long journeys. This long companionship has inspired poets and writers to document the camel’s unwavering loyalty to humans through tales, poems and proverbs. Today the camels remain one of the basic elements of Saudi Arabia’s history and civilization.

Crucially, the LCF stated that the exhibition took inspiration from a two-volume Arabic-language book about camels, launched by LCF in cooperation with the King Abdulaziz Public Library. That is why the event was exhibiting various works taken from the books while other works were made specifically for the exhibition.
