An unknown projectile struck a vessel on Sunday, 50 nautical miles north of Oman’s capital, Muscat, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported.
The attack ignited a fire in the vessel’s engine room, which authorities have since brought under control, according to Arab News.
This marks the second incident UKMTO reported on Sunday, following an earlier event off Kumzar in the Strait of Hormuz.
On Sunday, Iran reported that an oil tanker was sinking after being hit while trying to navigate the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
“The fate of the offending oil tanker that was struck while attempting to illegally pass through the Strait of Hormuz is that it is now sinking,” state TV reported.
The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on Saturday, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.
In response, Iran also launched a counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi as a retaliatory move, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.
One of these strikes had killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His killing has raised critical questions concerning Iran’s future.
As a critical maritime chokepoint, the Strait of Hormuz handles approximately a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil and roughly one‑fifth of all liquefied natural gas flows.
Due to the escalating tensions, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared on Saturday that the waterway was unsafe. Therefore, the authorities halted ship movements.
