Year of Arabic Poetry
Throughout the year, the governorate hosted the Year of Arabic Poetry. At the beginning of the year, there was a symposium that included the historical roots of Arabic poetry and its unique character. It was organized by Taif University and the Authority for Literature, Publishing, and Translation.
The symposium also featured a series of lectures, dialogues, critical sessions, and poetry evenings. This included the “Arabic Poetry Forum” as part of the Year of Arabic Poetry 2023 initiative. Poetry critics from inside and outside the Kingdom participating in various topics.
Moreover, the forum discussed the significance of poetry, its global status and its relationship with translation. Furthermore, it highlighted its role as one of the most important expressive arts deeply rooted in the Arabs.
Poetry holds a high place in societies. It serves as their voice, conveying their emotions, revealing their inner thoughts, and preserving their history and various life stories.
The forum enriched the poetic scene, describing it as intangible heritage and a human phenomenon practiced by both primitive and advanced societies.
Taif on Creative Cities Network List
Moreover, UNESCO announced the inclusion of Taif in its Creative Cities Network as the first creative city in the field of literature in the Kingdom. The inclusion was based on seven factors aligned with the programs of the three sectors.
These factors included the quality and volume of publishing in the city, the significant role of literature, drama, and poetry, the quality and diversity of educational programs focusing on local literature, literary events and festivals, the availability of public libraries and bookstores, cultural centers, and the role of traditional and new media in marketing literature and boosting its local market.
