Saudi Film Confex: Connecting Saudi Heritage with Cinematic Innovation

Saudi Arabia’s growing cinematic ambitions took center stage in Diriyah as the fourth edition of Saudi Film Confex kicked off at JAX Studios on Wednesday, bringing together actors, directors, and remarkable public and private sector leaders to explore the industry’s expanding opportunities.

Expanding the Kingdom’s Cinematic Reach

Following a distinctive year in which production spending on Saudi Film Commission-backed projects reached SAR1.3 billion ($347 million), the latest edition seeks to build on this progress and reinforce the Kingdom’s growing position in the global film industry.

In his opening remarks, Vice Minister of Culture Hamed M. Fayez highlighted the importance of connecting filmmakers, industry leaders, and investors to create opportunities for collaboration and support sustainable production growth.

“Our ambition is for the Saudi creator to achieve creativity, for the investor to find a sector rich in opportunities and promising for growth, and for our films to reach a wider audience with the quality, richness, and impact they carry,” he added.

What Is Driving the Growth of Saudi Cinema?

Held under the patronage of Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Saudi Film Commission’s board, the October 28–29 gathering reflects the Kingdom’s continued commitment to developing its cinematic sector.

Talent development remains an important part of this effort. According to the Saudi Film Industry’s 2025 annual report, the Saudi Film Commission supported 71 projects and provided specialized training to 6,900 men and women through 22 programs.

More significantly, the third edition of International Saudi Film Nights also drew 4,200 visitors, reflecting the expanding scope of the Kingdom’s cinematic activities.

Over the years, the event has evolved into a vital meeting point for the regional and international film industries. Its first three editions witnessed the signing of 100 agreements worth more than SAR1 billion and welcomed 220,000 professionals representing over 35 countries.

What Makes a Film Industry Thrive?

Despite postponements that affected other events across various sectors, Saudi Film Confex maintained its scheduled dates, with Saudi Film Commission CEO Abdullah Al-Eyaf reflecting on the significance of its growing influence.

He underscored that the forum’s achievements extend beyond financial figures to include the people, ideas, and creative projects that have emerged through its industry connections.

Describing it as a platform for collaboration, Al-Eyaf highlighted its role in connecting filmmakers with potential partners, helping creative ideas secure support, and establishing relationships that can extend well beyond the two-day gathering.

Al-Eyaf also highlighted the creative purpose of the two-day gathering, labeling JAX Studios as a vibrant space where filmmakers can exchange ideas, develop new projects, and bring stories closer to audiences eager to see narratives that reflect their experiences and identities.

Building an Integrated Film Industry

By bringing together different segments of the film industry, the forum stands out as a dynamic space for production and distribution companies, technical service providers, investors, financing institutions, and educational organizations to explore areas of cooperation.

This broad participation stands as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s efforts to develop an integrated cinematic ecosystem, attract investment, and strengthen industry partnerships in line with the National Culture Strategy under Saudi Vision 2030.

Moreover, the transformation of Saudi Arabia’s film industry has been shaped by the wider cultural ambitions of Vision 2030. Al-Eyaf pointed to the strategy’s role in creating room for the sector to grow, describing its current development as a reflection of what has been achieved over the past few years.

Stories Written into the Land

Al-Eyaf further emphasized the relationship between cultural preservation and technological advancement, using Diriyah’s historic mud-brick architecture alongside its modern virtual production facilities to illustrate Saudi Arabia’s broader development vision.

He also noted that the Kingdom’s cinematic ambitions are rooted in an identity that preserves its historical legacy while stimulating innovation and new creative possibilities.

Al-Eyaf concluded his remarks by returning to the symbolism of the Saudi landscape, describing its sand as a repository of stories that transcend its physical value.

He highlighted the tales of heroism and national solidarity embedded in the Kingdom’s history as an enduring source of cultural identity and storytelling inspiration.
