Unearthing Dadan: Excavations Reveal New Insights into Ancient Arabian Civilization

Dadan’s archaeological remains offer a rare glimpse into the development of ancient civilizations in northwestern Arabia, standing out as compelling evidence of the communities that once inhabited the region.

Ongoing excavations at the site in AlUla form part of the 2026–2027 archaeology season launched by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) across AlUla and Khaybar.

Through the study of historical sites and material evidence, the research seeks to build a deeper understanding of the region’s past.

What Can Dadan’s Burial Sites Reveal?

Remarkably, the ongoing excavations at Dadan are examining two key aspects of the ancient city: its funerary practices and residential life.

Photographs documented by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) show archaeologists working across both areas during the second phase of the project.

Building on five years of research, this stage seeks to trace Dadan’s development and establish a clearer picture of how its inhabitants organized their communities and carried out their daily activities.

Archaeological research relies not only on excavation but also on systematic documentation and the analysis of recovered evidence.

This season, specialized studies and digital recording are supporting investigations at historical sites, while Saudi specialists and university students are taking part in fieldwork.
Their participation provides practical training in excavation techniques, documentation methods, and archaeological analysis, contributing to the development of national expertise in the field.

Tracing Human History in Khaybar

More boldly, Khaybar’s ancient oasis provides a setting for investigating how human activity unfolded alongside changes in the natural environment.

That is why researchers are studying sediment records, ancient environmental conditions, and natural resources to better understand the landscape in which successive communities lived.

Complementing this work, other projects trace human activity in the area from the Neolithic period through the Islamic eras, extending the historical picture across thousands of years.

How Is Saudi Arabia Preserving Its Archaeological Heritage?

The ongoing projects reflect an advanced approach to archaeology that links historical research with heritage preservation and professional development.

Through its work in Dadan and Khaybar, the Royal Commission for AlUla is supporting the study and documentation of archaeological sites while providing Saudi specialists and students with opportunities to develop their skills.

These efforts seek to strengthen the foundations for future research and broaden understanding of northwestern Arabia’s historical legacy.

Uncovering More Layers of Dadan’s History

The ongoing excavations at Dadan build on growing efforts to uncover and interpret the history of the ancient city.

In April 2026, an exhibition titled “Illuminating Discoveries — Uncovering the Layers of Dadan’s History” showcased archaeological findings from Dadan and Umm Daraj, including stone inscriptions and more than 100 artifacts that offered insights into the city’s daily life, craftsmanship, and commercial connections.

The current archaeological season continues this work through further investigations of Dadan’s funerary and residential areas, seeking to trace the city’s development and deepen understanding of the communities that once inhabited it.
