Saudi Northern Borders Region Unveils Ancient Archaeological Treasures

Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders region is haven to a dazzling array of archaeological sites, highlighting a rich history of human settlement that stretches back to ancient times, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

The stone structures dispersed northwest of Arar are among the most remarkable sites that offer deep glimpses into the area’s civilizations.

These structures vary in shape, size, and design, with data indicating that they date back to the late Neolithic period and the beginning of subsequent eras.

Interestingly, archaeologists believe that they likely served as stone burial chambers, built to preserve the remains of the deceased.

Director General of Antiquities at the Heritage Commission, Ajab Al-Otaibi, said that the stone structures and rock art sites in the Northern Borders region are a pivotal part of Saudi Arabia’s national cultural heritage. They also offer a significant resource for both archaeological scholarship and scientific research.

He further stressed the significance of ongoing survey, documentation and conservation efforts to protect these cultural landmarks.

Interestingly, the region also boasts multiple significant rock art sites, including Shu’ayb Hamer, which features a wide range of drawings carved into natural rock surfaces, standing out as a key location for documenting early human activity in the area.

The carvings portray human figures alongside a variety of animals, such as camels, horses and gazelles, as well as different wild and predatory species that have long since disappeared from the region.
