UNESCO Recognizes Saudi Cultural Customs

The (UNESCO) has announced the inclusion of “Harees” (a traditional dish symbolizing knowledge, skills, and practices) and the “arts, skills, and practices associated with the craft of metal engraving” (gold, silver, and copper) in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” according to Saudi News Agency”

18th Session of Intergovernmental Committee

The announcement was made during the 18th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This session was held by UNESCO in Gaborone, Botswana, from December 4 to 9. It coincides with the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. This convention was ratified during the 32nd session of UNESCO’s General Conference.

Inclusion of Harees, Metal Engraving

The inclusion of Harees and metal engraving adds to the cultural elements already registered for the Kingdom in UNESCO’s Representative List . With this, the Kingdom’s file in UNESCO now includes 13 elements.

Saudi Achievements in 2023

2023 witnessed numerous achievements in various fields related to the Kingdom’s relationship with UNESCO and its member states. Notably, Saudi Arabia hosted the 45th Expanded Session of the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh in September.

UNESCO has registered Orok Bani Maarid Reserve as the Kingdom’s seventh world heritage site on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

UNESCO also recognized Taif as the third creative city in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Literary Network. Furthermore, UNESCO has included Mount Akma in UNESCO’s record of the memory of the world.

Saudi Arabia’s Role

Through its membership in UNESCO’s Executive Board for the 2023-2027 term, the Kingdom aims to strengthen international cooperation and contribute to achieving UNESCO’s strategic targets, ensuring its vital role within the organization.
