CST Launches Development of Electronic Waste Mgt initiative
The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) announced the launch of the “Development of Electronic Waste Management Regulations” initiative.
It launched the initiative in cooperation with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), to implement regulations in Zambia, Rwanda and Paraguay.
CST launched the initiative during COP28 conference, in the presence of the Governor of the Commission, Mohammad bin Saud. Al-Tamimi, Deputy Secretary-General of the Union Tomas Lamanauskas, and representatives of countries benefiting from the initiative.
Aims of the Initiative
The authority explained that the initiative aims to enhance the Kingdom’s efforts to lead international efforts in digital sustainability, and accelerate the shift towards green practices by implementing regulations that promote the circular economy. They aim to provide innovative solutions to reduce electronic waste to reach a sustainable digital future. The initiative is expected to contribute to laying the foundation stone for setting regulations and standards to reduce electronic waste globally. The electronic waste’s volume reaches 54 million tons annually, while only 17% of it is recycled.
Tomas Lamanauskas emphasized the importance of establishing regulations and legislation for treating electronic waste in the government and private sectors. He also emphasized moving to the circular economy. This is one of the most prominent solutions to confront the effects of electronic waste on the environment. He pointed to the importance of disseminating these regulations and implementing them by regulators around the world due to their major role in accelerating the transformation towards green practices.
It is noteworthy that the Authority’s participation in COP28 conference comes within the framework of strengthening the Kingdom’s efforts to lead possible international efforts for digital sustainability. This is in line with its directions in support of the circular economy. The Kingdom has worked on many qualitative initiatives that have contributed to raising awareness and disseminating best practices in Uses of technology for a sustainable future and society.
