Simsimiyya: A Coastal Musical Gem
Simsimiyya holds a special place in the artistic identity of coastal communities. This wooden lyre, with its distinct sound, is central to social occasions such as weddings and local festivals. The instrument accompanies traditional songs that narrate stories of sailors and coastal life.
The music played on the Simsimiyya strengthens communal bonds and connects generations. It highlights the significance of maritime culture while fostering joy and unity among listeners.
Simsimiyya: Preserving Tradition, Embracing Modernity
The art of crafting and playing the Simsimiyya has been passed down through generations. It blends traditional techniques with modern interpretations, keeping the instrument relevant in contemporary cultural settings. This dual role ensures the preservation of historical narratives while adapting to modern artistic expressions.
Saudi Arabia’s Expanding Heritage Portfolio

These elements include Al-Ardah Al-Najdiyah, majlis, Arabic coffee, falconry, Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, Sadu weaving, and camel herding chants. Recent additions like Saudi Khawlani coffee, metal engraving, the Harees dish and the world-renowned Taif rose further reflect the Kingdom’s rich cultural diversity.
Advancing Vision 2030 Goals
