Saudi Transport Sector Makes Bold Strides Towards Digitalization with New Initiatives
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics has revolutionized its digital transformation through the launch of a new Digitalization and Technical Processing Center and the Unified Documents and Records Platform.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Transport and Logistics Services Saleh Al-Jasser during a ceremony highlighting the participation of several senior officials and industry leaders, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
In line with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030 goals, the new launches are basically part of the ministry’s ambitious strategy to accelerate its digital transformation.
In the light of this, the new center and platform are part of the ministry’s efforts to increase the transport and logistics sector’s contribution to the gross domestic product from 6% in 2021 to 10% by 2030.
Therefore, this would generate an additional SR45 billion ($11.9 billion) in non-oil revenues per year.
To this end, the NTLS places infrastructure development and operational improvements as top priorities.
Obviously, the main plans include expanding the railway network by roughly 8,080 km, which features the 1,300 km “land bridge” project. Similarly, the projects involve fostering port infrastructure to accommodate more than 40 million containers per year.
Furthermore, the strategy intends to increase air freight capacity to more than 4.5 million tons annually, as well as expanding international flight destinations to over 250.
Apart from the digitalization initiatives, the ministry also inaugurated a historical exhibition featuring key documents, photographs, and equipment used throughout the history of the Kingdom’s transport sector.
Crucially, the exhibition boasts specialized laboratories for document restoration and sterilization. To ensure the security and confidentiality of information, the exhibition also features a centralized destruction center.
