Saudi Arabia Wins Top Honors at International Nuclear Science Olympiad
Saudi Arabia secured first place in the third edition of the International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO 2026), which the Kingdom hosted from the beginning of this month through Saturday.
The Olympiad was organized in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), and King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy, and was hosted by King Abdulaziz University. This marked the first time the event was held in the Middle East.
The Kingdom claimed the overall title and the “Nuclear Science Ambassador” distinction. Saudi student Amjad Mahmoud Issa Al-Darwish won first place and the gold medal, in addition to earning the “Nuclear Science Ambassador” title after achieving the highest combined score in the theoretical and practical examinations.
Saudi student Jana Saleh Abdullah Al-Sabil also won a gold medal and received the “Best Female Student” award, presented by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Abdulaziz Abdulmohsen Al-Sharait secured the silver medal, while Saleh Mubarak Dhaifallah Al-Harbi won the bronze medal. Overall, the Olympiad awarded eight gold medals, 13 silver medals, and 18 bronze medals, alongside several special awards.
During the closing ceremony, Dr. Maya Al-Azri, president of INSO 2026, expressed her appreciation to Saudi Arabia for hosting the Olympiad. She praised the high standard of organization and the coordination among government entities, academic institutions, organizing committees, and volunteers, saying their efforts enabled the competition to be held in line with the highest international standards.
Nuclear Science Olympiad
The closing ceremony took place at the King Faisal Conference Center at King Abdulaziz University. It included a visual presentation highlighting the Olympiad’s journey since its launch, as well as the Kingdom’s hosting of the competition and its accompanying events. The presentation was followed by the announcement of the results and the honoring of winners with medals and special awards.
At the end of the ceremony, Saudi Arabia handed over the hosting of the 2027 International Nuclear Science Olympiad to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
Established by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2024, the International Nuclear Science Olympiad is an international scientific platform for secondary-school students. It aims to develop their knowledge and skills in nuclear science, promote awareness of the safe and peaceful uses of nuclear technologies, encourage young people to pursue studies in the field, and inspire them to apply science and innovation to solutions that support sustainable development.
