Saudi to Shift Regional Headquarters of International Firms to Riyadh
Saudi Arabia is set to implement a pivotal policy, with a January 2024 deadline, urging international firms desiring to clinch government contracts to relocate their regional headquarters to Riyadh. This move is part of a broader initiative to position the nation as a significant hub in the global business landscape. The directive was unveiled in February 2021, demonstrating Saudi Arabia’s steadfast commitment to fostering a conducive environment for foreign investments and bolstering its economic diversification efforts, away from a predominantly oil-centric economy
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been steadfast in its vision to metamorphose into a key player within the global economic arena. This aspiration is encapsulated in its Vision 2030, which emphasizes economic diversification and fostering a conducive ecosystem for business. The initiative to shift regional headquarters to Riyadh aligns seamlessly with this vision, propelling the nation closer to its ambitious objectives.
The Saudi Government signaled its intention to limit contractual engagements with foreign firms lacking a regional headquarters in the Kingdom, as early as February 2022. New guidelines were subsequently rolled out to incentivize companies keen on establishing their regional headquarters within the KSA. This policy not only augments Saudi Arabia’s attractiveness as a business hub but also facilitates direct access to the local economy for multinational corporations.
By October 2023, a total of 44 multinational companies had heeded the call, obtaining licenses to establish their regional headquarters in Riyadh. These firms span a diverse array of sectors including technology and food & beverage, among others. The move is mutually beneficial, granting companies direct access to a burgeoning market while simultaneously driving the nation’s economic diversification agenda forward.
Saudi Arabia’s initiative, delineated by the January 2024 deadline, for relocating regional headquarters to Riyadh, underscores a significant stride in actualizing its long-term economic blueprint.
