Saudi Arabia has exerted a major effort to protect the environment and preserve its sustainable resources.
The Kingdom aims to contribute 15% of the required $10.4 billion for clean energy projects managed by the Public Investment Fund.
It plans to rely on renewable energy sources for 50% of its electricity generation by 2030, thereby eliminating 44 million tons of carbon emissions by 2035.
Public Investment Fund Role
The Public Investment Fund is working towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 through a carbon circular economy approach. It aims to be among the first global sovereign wealth funds, and the first in the Middle East, to target net-zero emissions by 2050.
Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, under Minister Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadley, has initiated around 65 environmental projects, investing 55 billion riyals.
Consequently, these projects focus on waste recycling, pollution control, vegetation growth, and improving water quality.
Moreover, Saudi Arabia produces about 100 million tons of waste yearly, but its recycling rate is below 4%, one of the world’s lowest. Therefore, the Ministry plans to boost this rate to 95%, anticipating.

Waste Management
The National Waste Management Center plays a pivotal role in developing the national waste management sector. It establishes a national waste management strategy, evaluates current conditions, surveys waste in all regions to create a national database.
Saudi Arabia continuously seeks sustainable waste management solutions, turning waste into valuable resources. It has developed comprehensive solutions for municipal solid waste.
The country has also implemented systems for recycling construction and demolition waste to divert it from landfills.
These developments reflect the Saudi government’s commitment to enhancing environmental sustainability and protecting the environment. These initiatives and investments in the environmental sector are part of efforts to achieve the targets of Saudi Vision 2030.

Saudi Green Initiative

Finally, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has pledged $2.5 billion to this initiative for the next decade, and Saudi Arabia will also host its main office.
Regarding Green Riyadh, King Salman bin Abdulaziz initiated the Green Riyadh program. It’s a key environmental conservation project in Saudi Arabia.
The program’s primary focus is to plant over 7.5 million trees throughout Riyadh. These trees will be in public parks, schools, and around academic and health institutions.
