Saudi “Green Middle East Initiative” summit issues a Presidential statement

The Saudi Green Middle East Summit, in its second edition, was held in Sharm El Sheikh, the Arab Republic of Egypt, at the joint gracious invitation of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Prime Minister, in the presence of some leaders from Middle Eastern and African countries, as well as international officials.

The leaders praised the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to preserve the environment and limit the effects of climate change, particularly HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and his two initiatives, “Green Saudi Arabia” and “Green Middle East,” for their positive impact on the environment in the region and around the world.

The Arab Republic of Egypt and His Excellency the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, were praised for hosting the second Green Middle East Summit in conjunction with the Climate Change Conference (COP27).

The leaders emphasized the importance of collaborative teamwork in achieving the Green Middle East Initiative’s desired goals. As a result, they believed in the importance of its goals, which are achieved through concerted efforts and active participation by all countries in the region.

The leaders agreed that the second Green Middle East Initiative would help to accelerate the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. It will also bring prosperity to the people of the member countries.

The leaders emphasized the importance of meeting climate and environmental goals by adhering to relevant UN-approved international conventions, which contribute to meeting the goals of the UN Sustainable Development Organization for the year 2030, as well as the UN Decade for the Restoration of Ecosystems.

The leaders reaffirmed the initiative’s member states’ commitment to carry out their pledges and take the necessary steps. This will limit the average global temperature rise to the levels set by the Paris Agreement.

The leaders emphasized the importance of working together to support the Paris Agreement’s implementation and the achievement of sustainable development goals. This is in a way that contributes to economic diversification and poverty eradication.

With the signing of memoranda and electrical interconnection agreements with a variety of countries in the region, including Iraq, Egypt, and Jordan, the leaders enhanced the integration of the optimal energy mix to generate electricity, facilitated the absorption of renewable energy into electric networks, and contributed to meeting climate change targets.

The leaders reaffirmed their support for efforts to reduce emissions in the Middle East and beyond.

The leaders emphasized the importance of working together to address and manage the challenges posed by greenhouse gas emissions using a holistic approach and a variety of clean technologies. This includes the circular carbon economy.

The leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening collaborative action to support efforts to develop and disseminate modern technologies for carbon capture, use, storage, and technologies.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a just transformation of a low-emissions development model capable of adapting to the effects of climate change, based on proven scientific recommendations, responsibilities, and agreed-upon principles.

The leaders emphasized the importance of international collaboration in the field of “clean fuel” solutions to provide food, which contributes to the achievement of the sustainable development goals in general, and the seventh goal in particular, which aspires to universal access to reliable and sustainable energy at the lowest possible cost.

The leaders expressed their determination to see the Green Middle East Summit’s goals met, as well as to serve the interests of member states and international partners.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to building a better future for future generations, believing in the initiative’s aspiration for the region’s long-term development.

The leaders emphasized the importance of mobilizing and providing the necessary financing for the Green Middle East Initiative. They welcomed financing pledges from a variety of organizations and funds, including the Islamic Development Bank and the OPEC Fund for International Development.

The leaders emphasized that implementing the Green Middle East Initiative’s objectives will help to reduce and manage greenhouse gas emissions.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to achieving the initiative’s goals of reducing land degradation, restoring vegetation cover, preserving biodiversity, adapting to climate change, and mitigating its negative effects. This will reduce economic losses, support sustainable development, and achieve prosperity.

The leaders agreed to work together to improve natural resource management and combat land degradation and desertification. In addition, they agreed to make joint efforts to improve water and food security in the face of climate change’s negative effects.

The leaders emphasized the importance of cross-border cooperation in a variety of fields, particularly in managing resources vulnerable to climate change.

The leaders urged countries, organizations, relevant regional and international bodies, financing institutions, and the private sector to provide financial and technical assistance to the initiative. This will enable it to achieve its ambitious national, regional, and international goals.
