Ministry of Environment Participates in Tenth Session of ITPGRFA
In a significant development, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture’s delegation participated in the tenth session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA). This event took place at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome from November 20 to 24.
Key Discussions and Strategies
The meeting highlighted several crucial topics. These included strategies for capacity development and contributions to the global framework for biodiversity for sustainable food systems. Additionally, the meeting focused on implementing and enhancing the multilateral system for accessing resources and sharing benefits, financing strategies for the Treaty, the Global Information System, and the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, including farmers’ rights.
Enhancing Cooperation and Future Planning
The session also covered enhancing cooperation with organizations. It reviewed the multi-year program of work of ITPGRFA and examined digital sequence information related to genetic resources, relevant to the Treaty’s objectives. Furthermore, the meeting identified the time and location of the eleventh session of the Governing Body.
Significance and Impact of the Treaty
The International Treaty, effective since 2004, is crucial for the future of agriculture and global food security. Open to all parties, it provides a multifaceted framework for accessing genetic resources and sharing their benefits. The Treaty plays a vital role in supporting developing countries to better and sustainably utilize plant genetic resources. Prior to this meeting, regional consultations for member state delegates and contracting parties were held on November 18 and 19, 2023.
