Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will undergo a hernia surgery under general anasthetic on Sunday, according to his office, amid the ongoing war in Gaza, reported Reuters.
“On Saturday night, during a routine checkup for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a hernia was found,” his office said in a statement.
Less than a year ago, last July, physicians at Sheba Medical Center fitted a pacemaker in Netanyahu, following an alert relayed by the internal cardiac monitor that was fitted inside him a week earlier. This procedure coincided with protests in Israel against his hard-right government’s judicial overhaul plan.
A pacemaker is a device that runs on battery and prevents the heart from beating too slowly.
The prime minister’s office announced that Netanyahu will hold a conference before the surgery at 16:30 GMT.
“I assure you that I will get through this treatment successfully and return to action very quickly,” said the PM.
On October 7, Hamas launched an attack on Israel which left 1,200 killed. Moreover, Hamas took 250 hostages back to Gaza. Since then, Israel has been bombing Gaza, killing more than 32,000 Palestinians and displacing huge number of Gazans. This resulted in an alarming humanitarian crisis in the Strip, which provoked many international calls and efforts to ceasefire in the strip and allow more aid to flow to all Gazans.
Recently, the United Nations Security Council passed a ceasefire resolution. 14 countries voted in favor of the resolution while the United States of America abstained, which provoked Netanyahu to cancel a delegation to Washington.
