Kingdom Leads Tobacco Control Conference in Panama

Unified Delegation Efforts

Saudi Arabia took a prominent role at the Tobacco Control Conference in Panama, leading the discussions of the Second Committee.

The conference, a significant event under the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, brought together nations committed to combating the global tobacco epidemic. Saudi Arabia’s delegation, elected by their peers, underscored the nation’s commitment to leading in the fight against tobacco.

Unified Delegation Efforts

This delegation was comprised of key figures from the Saudi Ministry of Health, the Public Health Authority, and the Food and Drug Authority, showcasing a unified approach towards public health and safety.

Dr. Mansour Al-Qahtani, a notable figure in tobacco control efforts within the Kingdom, chaired the committee’s meetings.

His leadership was pivotal in steering discussions towards enhancing compliance with the convention’s guidelines and sharing progress on national efforts against tobacco use.

Addressing Tobacco’s Impact

The conference highlighted the collective resolve of 183 participating parties to address the multifaceted impact of tobacco. Additionally,  discussion points revolved around safeguarding global populations from tobacco’s detrimental effects on health, society, economy, and environment.

A key focus of the discussion was on eradicating the illegal tobacco trade, a significant challenge in global health governance.
