The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has achieved a groundbreaking medical milestone by performing the first robotic-assisted retroperitoneal lymph node dissection in the Middle East.
Uro-Oncology Surgical Team
According to a press release from KFSHRC, the procedure was conducted by the Uro-Oncology surgical team led by Dr. Majed Al-Rumayyan, reaffirming the hospital’s leadership in advanced surgical care. The surgery involved a patient in his thirties diagnosed with testicular cancer that had metastasized to lymph nodes located near critical blood vessels, including the aorta and inferior vena cava. This region poses significant challenges due to its anatomical complexity, with heightened risks of severe bleeding and nerve damage. Despite these challenges, the robotic-assisted technique allowed for precise dissection while safeguarding surrounding structures.
Advantages of Robotic Surgery
Dr. Al-Rumayyan highlighted the advantages of robotic surgery, particularly its minimally invasive nature. Compared to traditional methods, the procedure required significantly smaller incisions, resulting in reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, and a quicker recovery. Remarkably, the patient was discharged just one day after the surgery, a notable improvement over the typical 5-7 day hospital stay associated with conventional techniques.
The advanced robotic technology also facilitated unparalleled precision in removing affected lymph nodes, preserving critical nerves, and reducing risks to major blood vessels. This precision minimized the likelihood of complications such as chylous ascites, retrograde ejaculation, venous thromboembolism, and nerve damage.
KFSHRC’s reputation continues to grow, as it has been ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 20th globally among the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centers for the second consecutive year. It has also been recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, according to the 2024 Brand Finance rankings, and was listed among the World’s Best Smart Hospitals for 2025 by Newsweek.
